    3. Substrate Preparation

Retrorreflective sheeting is usually applied over either galvanized steel or aluminium plate or painted steel plate. Galvanized steel and aluminium should be perfectly clean and grease-free, with a temperature at the moment of application of between 15º and 30ºC.

For painted metal surfaces, the sheeting offers excellent adhesive properties. In most cases adherence to painted metal surfaces is strong, although this depends on the type of paint used and the surface finish. It is advisable to experiment with test samples using the habitually employed paint type and painting procedure to ensure that the level of adherence is suitable, and then always follow the same procedure to obtain the best results.

If for any reason it is decided to change the substrate paint or painting procedure, the adherence test should be repeated using new test samples.

If the painted substrate is not very porous, it should be finely sanded and the application area should be thoroughly cleaned before the sheeting is attached.

Note: Retroreflective sheeting should never be applied over concrete.
